The COGS Christmas Bash was held in the Assembly Rooms in the Market Hall, which is located right in the Town Centre of Chesterfield.  The event was held on Sunday 21st December, and was open from 9.00am until 5.00pm.  Our LOTR game was one of many games being played at the event.

The table we used for our game measured 15 feet long by 5 feet wide, and was virtually covered with all of our terrain and scenery pieces.  The table layout was divided into four types of terrain, at the Northern most table edge was a Bree like village, just to the South of this village was a forested region, then a central hilly region, and finally at the Southern table edge was a ruined city and river.

The points for this titanic battle exceeded 15000, exactly how much over 15000 we went, we do not know for sure, as we had stopped counting by this point.  However there were literally hundreds of miniatures in use on the table.

To make the game interesting objectives were set, these points are identified as Gem Stone markers visible in the pictures. Some of the markers were designated as Special Events which introduced characters such as Grima Wormtongue, Gollum, Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin and Treebeard.  The other markers designated how many Victory points that objective was worth, normal playing cards were used to represent this, and they can be seen in some of the pictures as well.  The Victory points and Special events were randomly chosen, by drawing playing cards to see what the event or objective was to be.  Yith had put some thought into devising this, and it put a more interesting slant on the game as it made the players think more tactically, as killing your opponent's forces was not necessarily the most important factor to consider.

The game was started just after 9.00am and we finished playing at just before 4.30pm, having managed to play six full rounds, which all things considered was no small achievement.

The final result was also a surprise, the Evil side had accumulated 35 Victory points, the Good side having accumulated 34 Victory points, a very close game indeed, and one that left all eight of us feeling very satisfied having played this titanic battle.

Below follow a selection of pictures taken during the initial deployment and during the game.

The combat with Modor Orcs and Uruks fighting the High and Wood Elves gets well into the swing.  Glorfindel gets targeted by masses of Uruks and repeated attempts to Tranfix him by Saruman, but he stands his ground and takes on all comers, although out of Might, Will and fate by the end of thr game, he survived the battle killing many opponents as did Elrond.  Unfortunately Arwen fell to the combined attacks of multiple opponents and a Ring Wraith.

The resolve of the Goblins starts to falter as one of their Shamen is killed by Faramir's Rangers bow fire from the bridge, Treebeard is also causing Terror amonst the Goblins. The Gondorian battle line is starting to crumble, but they manage to hold their ground. The few surviving Uruks are being reduced further still in numbers.  The Cave Trolls have also had their wounds reduced in number, although survive the conclusion of the battle.
