Notes…

I have to admit to feeling somewhat disappointed with the pose that the Games Workshop designers had chosen to use for the model of the Witch King from the Fall of the Witch King box set.  So I set about the task of converting mine to make the pose look a little more like the Witch King as he is seen in his confrontation with Eowyn in the ROTK movie.

The conversion itself is not that difficult, however it is a little fiddly in part due to the small size of some of the parts.

Stage 1…Preparing the model and cuts needed.

1... Cut the Mace from the Witch Kings right hand, place to one side for later.  File the top and bottom of the hand to remove any excess metal.

2... Cut off the sword from the side of the Witch King model, BUT make sure that you keep the pommel from the sword, as you will need it later.  Carefully file and clean up the area where you cut the sword from the model.

3…Cut the pommel from the rest of the sword handle, place it carefully to one side.

4…Make sure that you clean up your work area, as your are going to be working with some very small parts.

Stage 2…Drilling holes in the model.

1... Drill a hole through the right hand, so that you can pin the sword, do this using either a Micro drill bit or Pin Vice.

2... Drill a hole through the centre of the left hand, top to bottom, the Handle of the Mace will be pinned to this.

3... Drill a small hole in the pommel, and another into the blade of the sword, (you will need to be very careful here as the pommel is very small, one slip and you can end up losing the part).

4... Drill a hole through the handle of the mace, so that it fits into the hole you drilled in the palm of the Witch Kings hand.

Stage 3…Re-assembly of the model.

1... Glue a small length of thin brass rod through each of the holes in the hands, snip off any excess length to the rod.

2... Glue the pommel to the bottom of the hand into the pin.

3…Glue the sword blade to the top of the hand into the pin.

4…Glue the mace to the pin on the left hand.

5…Glue the model into the slotta base.

Stage 4…Painting the model.

1...Undercoat the model with black spray.

2…Paint Chaos black onto any area that the black spray has missed.

3…Mix up a little Fortress Grey into some Chaos Black and drybrush all of the Witch Kings robes.

4…Wash the robes with a mix of Black and Brown ink.

5…Add a little more Fortress Grey into the Chaos Black and lightly drybrush the robes again.

6…Drybrush the armour and weapons with Boltgun Metal.

7…Wash the armour with a mix of Black and Brown ink.

8…Drybrush the armour with Mithril Silver.

9…Paint the sword with Mithril Silver.

10..Wash the sword blade with a mix of Black and Brown ink.

11…Lightly stipple Bestial Brown to the bottom of the robes to represent dirt stains.

Stage 5…Basing the model.

1…Apply PVA to the models base.

2…Dip base into the sand.

3…Wash Brown ink over the sand, leave to dry.

4…Lightly dryrush a mix of Fortress grey and Bleached Bone over the base.

5…Lightly drybrush neat Bleached Bone over the base.

6…Pain the edge of the base with Bestial Brown.

7…Apply a coat of Purity Seal varnish.

There you have one converted and fully finished With King model, which to my mind is now in a far better pose than the original model.

Why not go and give it a try, it is an easy enough conversion to attempt, even for a beginner to the hobby.
